Berry Motor Group visits the GRM Volvo V8 Supercar teamLast Saturday, some of the team at Berry Motor Group had a chance to get close and personal with the new Volvo Polestar V8 Supercars at Garry Rogers Motorsports Open Day. A large crowd turned out to see behind the scenes at Garry Rogers and to meet Garry Rogers and some of the drivers and mechanics. If you have caught any Motorsport news recently, you would have seen that the new Valvoline Volvo Polestar S60 racing cars have been doing really well in their first season of V8 Supercar racing. In the first 6 events of the year, Scott McLaughlin has been on the podium 5 times including 2 first places. No one expected the Volvo's to be this fast in their first season. Naturally we love our Volvo's at Berry Motor Group and this was a great chance see what makes the Polestar so successful. [caption id="attachment_2413" align="alignright" width="300"] Graeme Berry has a look at the 650hp Volvo S60 V8 Supercar engine[/caption]We had a chance to talk to Gypsy (long time development engineer at Garry Rogers) about engine design and how the lightweight Volvo V8 gave them a real advantage. The aluminium block is much lighter than the Ford and Holden iron blocks and they cleverly use a 30kg steel dry sump as ballast. This keeps the centre of gravity very low in the car and helps to keep the car very flat in corners. We caught up with the fabricators and had a close look at a new chassis. The welding and detailed engineering in the chassis was amazing. The GRM Volvo/Valvoline team has always been one of the friendliest teams in pit lane and Garry Rogers and drivers Scott McLaughlin and Robert Dahlgren were happy to chat, pose for photos and sign autographs.
